I have been living in Hillbrow for 19 years and yes am 19 years currently. So I know the ins and outs of Hillbrow like nobody. Hillbrow has a rich history that has not yet been explored and on our tour, we explore that history. One interesting twist in our tour is that we tend to compare the history and the modern history of Hillbrow. I also share my personal stories of living in Hillbrow both the good and bad stories. We also allow you to engage with some of the community members so you can also feel like a community member. A very special moment on the tour is when I allow tourists to come inside my building and see where I live and enter my room and talk to my mother, I find that very touching. Our tour is not a fixed tour like other tours, I let events unfold by themselves, for example, if I see someone I know I allow them to share whatever they want if they are interested and most of them do.

Our tour begins at the Hector Peterson Memorial, where you will learn about the significance of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, a significant turning point in the Apartheid system. We will then walk down Moema Street, retracing the steps of the historic march. As we continue down Vilakazi Street, we will visit Nelson Mandela's house, where you will have 20 minutes to explore inside where he lived until he's 27 years imprisonment (entrance fee not included).

Next, we will stop at Desmond Tutu's house, another landmark in Soweto's history. Following this visit, we will enjoy a delicious lunch at a local shop.

After lunch, we will take a minibus taxi to Orlando East, giving you a taste of the local mode of transport to the famous Soweto Towers. Our final stop will be at an informal settlement called Nomzamo Park, where you will gain insight into the daily lives of many Soweto residents.

Why Hillbrow?

It was laid out as a residential suburb during 1894 and 1895, with Richard Currie auctioning the stands. In 1897 it became part of Johannesburg's Sanitary Board. After World War Two, developers started purchasing the stands at values beyond their worth and eventually turned it into blocks of flats.

That's when the story of this neighborhood begins, the discovery of Gold in Johannesburg saw people from all over the world flying into the city and Hillbrow welcomed all of them.
