From 1 July 2026, travellers entering or leaving South
Africa must complete the SARS Online Traveller Declaration before
travelling.
The declaration covers Customs requirements, including goods, currency
and other items carried into or out of South Africa.
Submit it no more than 24 hours before departure. For a
connecting journey, complete it within 24 hours before the final flight
travelling directly to South Africa.
A separate declaration is required for every traveller, including
children and infants. Save or print the confirmation received after
submission.
Effective from 1 September 2025, a mandatory
conservation levy applies to excursions involving a boat ride.
This includes excursions such as Safari Blue, Prison Island, Nakupenda
Sandbank, Mnemba Island and dhow cruises.
Please carry sufficient cash to pay the levy directly
to the excursion operator when departing for your tour.
Before You Travel
Before leaving home, please make sure that your travel documents and
holiday arrangements are in order.
Check that your passport meets the latest validity requirements.
Confirm whether a visa or other entry approval is required.
Complete the Zanzibar Health Surveillance Form.
Complete the South African SARS Traveller Declaration.
Purchase the mandatory Zanzibar inbound travel insurance.
Review your airline’s baggage and check-in requirements.
Confirm your airport transfer and hotel arrangements.
Arrange comprehensive personal travel insurance where required.
Keep printed and digital copies of important travel documents.
